  • Ofrecé algo a cambio.

  • "Voy a comprar hielo."

It always happens. A whole week with no wind, and right on the Saturday of your cousin's wedding the forecast shows a steady 18 knots from the south. You don't have to choose between family and the water: with a bit of planning and a healthy dose of honesty, you can ride in the afternoon and show up at the party combed, fragrant and not smelling of wetsuit. This guide is half joking, but everything in it works.

The golden rule

Sneaking out doesn't mean disappearing. You tell them, you negotiate and you deliver. A rider who's late to a wedding gets one session; one who's on time gets permission for the next ten.

The curious fact that works in your favour

On the Río de la Plata, the S/SW thermal wind usually kicks in after midday and drops around sunset. And most Argentine family events happen right at the edges: christenings, almost always in the morning or at midday, and wedding parties, at night. In other words: the social calendar and the weather calendar, by pure coincidence, barely overlap. The 2 to 5 pm window is yours, if you know how to use it.

Step 1: the negotiation (with love)

  • Give notice early, not on the day. "There might be wind on Saturday — okay if I go out from 2 to 4 and I'm ready by 6?" sounds very different from vanishing with the board in the car.
  • Offer something in return. Taking the kids to the park, handling the gift, driving home after the party. Bartering is the foundation of every civilised society.
  • Never make up excuses. "I need to sort something with the car" lasts until the first Instagram photo with a wing in your hand. The truth, told with a smile, always works better.
  • Invite them. Many families discover that watching from the beach, with mate and pastries, is a great plan. Some end up taking lessons.

Step 2: timing, worked out backwards

The trick is to plan back from the event time, not forward from the wind.

If the event is at…Get off the water at…Why
8:00 pm (wedding party)5:00 pmHalf an hour to de-rig, one hour to drive, an hour and a half to shower, dress and arrive without rushing.
1:00 pm (lunch after a christening)Don't go out beforeThe thermal usually comes in after midday: ride once lunch is over, if everyone's on board.
6:00 pm (family birthday)3:30 pmBirthdays are a bit more forgiving, but the cake won't wait.

Always add a 30-minute buffer. The wind can come in late, motorway traffic is merciless and a wet wetsuit is famous for not wanting to come off.

Step 3: the elegant escape kit

All of this goes in the car the night before, so that Saturday is "I'm off for two hours" and not "where did I leave the pump?":

  • Your gear, planned in advance: the right wing for the forecast (chart here), the board, the foil with its bolts, helmet, vest and leash.
  • A 5-litre jug of fresh water: to rinse yourself and your gear if there's no shower.
  • Transformation kit: big towel, changing poncho, deodorant, comb, wet wipes and lip balm.
  • The event clothes, on a hanger and in their cover. Never folded in the boot under the board (we say this from other people's experience).
  • A dry bag for the wet wetsuit, so it touches nothing else.

Step 4: the session, without rushing

This is the serious part. Most mistakes on the water happen when you're in a hurry. Racing the clock makes you go out with the wrong wing, ignore a shifting wind or stay "one more run" far from shore.

  • Check the wind and the river level before leaving home, not at the beach.
  • Set an alarm on your watch for when to get off the water, and stick to it.
  • If the wind doesn't come in on time, there's no session. Better a Saturday without riding than arriving at the wedding with a frown.

Step 5: the triumphant re-entry

  • Your hair: river water gives hair a personality of its own. If there's no shower at the club, the fresh-water jug and a comb work miracles.
  • The wetsuit smell: it's real and it lingers. Shower with soap, no exceptions, and keep the wetsuit out of the family car.
  • The helmet mark: it fades in about 20 minutes. Plan for it.
  • The happy face: that one doesn't fade. And it's the best argument for the next negotiation.

Excuses we don't recommend (and why)

  • "I'm going to buy ice." Nobody takes three hours to buy ice.
  • "Work called." Your tan and windswept hair say otherwise.
  • "I'm dropping by a friend's." Technically true if the friend is the wind, but it doesn't count.

The conclusion is the same as always: honesty, with good humour and a clear plan, is the most effective excuse there is.
